Stephen Hobson

Stephen emigrated from the UK to Australia with his family in 2000. He was the Director of Artspace Mackay from February 2001 to April 2002. From 1998 until his departure for Australia, he was the Director of Plymouth Arts Centre. Prior to this, he worked as a university lecturer teaching photographic theory and practice, a freelance arts consultant, an arts funding officer, successfully directed his own photography businesses for many years, and managed three photographic training programs that were considered national role models in the UK.

Hobson has organised and curated over fifty exhibitions, including a touring exhibition of Australian Aboriginal art in the UK. He has been a contributor and editor to a range of publications. His qualifications include an honours degree from Falmouth School of Art in Fine Art and an MA from the University of Exeter. Stephen was awarded a PhD in 2007 by Griffith University for his research How can photographic practice assist our quest for intimacy with an ideal Other? Stephen teaches for the Art Theory department at Griffith University, Queensland College of Art, and continues to make work for exhibition and publication.
